Need to know: Prenatal Vitamins

Starting Your Prenatal Vitamin Regimen

Starting this regimen at least one month before conception lays a strong foundation for both maternal and fetal health. If you weren't planning your pregnancy and find yourself pregnant now, start right away!

So many people are unsure what prenatal to select. There are so many options on the market it can be truly confusing. It is best to try pill form first, find one that contains the essential ingredients, and experiment from there. Some pills pack all the ingredients into a daily dose, but the size may be larger. Other pills may be smaller but require 2-3 pills per day! In addition to the minimum PNV requirements other brands mix in ingredients for nausea, constipation, and other pregnancy symptoms.

Let's delve into the essential ingredients that make a prenatal vitamin a powerhouse for a healthy pregnancy.

Folic Acid: Guardian of Neural Tube Development

Calcium: Building Blocks for Strong Bones

Iron: Sustaining Oxygen Transport

Vitamin D: Partnering for Bone Health

DHA: Nurturing Brain and Eye Development

Choline: Aiding Neural Tube and Brain Development

Vitamins B and C: Essential for Energy and Immunity

Understanding the recommended doses:

Selecting a prenatal vitamin with these key ingredients and appropriate doses is a proactive step toward a healthier pregnancy. Of course, appropriate nutrition via a variety of fruits, vegetables and proteins in your diet is important as well. Always consult with your healthcare provider to tailor your prenatal vitamin regimen to your specific needs.
